Zahra Baker was 8 months old when her mother abandoned her with her father, in Wagga Wagga, Australia. Shortly after her mother leaving, her father moved the two of them to Giru, Australia, so that his mother could help him raise Zahra. Things moved along normally for the family, until 2005 when Zahra was diagnosed with bone cancer, which was localized to her left leg.
Doctors opted for an above the knee amputation, in the hopes that it would be curative. Unfortunately, it was not, which led to Zahra having to undergo intensive chemotherapy, which left her with diminished hearing.
